Carroll, Iowa

Carroll is located in western Iowa, 87 miles (140 kilometers) northwest of Des Moines and 108 miles (174 kilometers) northeast of Omaha. It is the seat of Carroll County, and is home to 10,106 people.

The community was named after Charles Carroll, one of the men who signed the Declaration of Independence. You can find out more about the area's past at the Carroll County Historical Museum, which houses a fine collection of artifacts from the 1800s to the present, a photo archive, and a genealogy library. Other noteworthy sights include the 90-year-old Warren Pony Bridge and the 7 D Corsair Fighter plane on display just outside of the city. This type of fighter plane was often used during the Vietnam War, and is dedicated to the Carroll County residents who participated in the conflict.

Swan Lake Park is the place to go if you'd like to combine historical sightseeing with a romp in the great outdoors. The park contains a one-room schoolhouse and log cabin from the 1800s, as well as a farmstead museum featuring a collection of buildings, tools, and horse-drawn machinery. The 510-acre (206-hectare) park also has a large lake for swimming, boating, and fishing; miles of trails for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing; and a conservation education center with interactive wildlife exhibits. The 33-mile-long (53-kilometer-long) Sauk Rail Trail runs through the park, and connects to Carroll and several other outdoor attractions.

Sports enthusiasts will also find a number of excellent facilities inside the city, including an 18-hole municipal golf course and a number of lovely parks. The Carroll Recreation Center is the city's largest sports complex, and offers an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a large gym, theater, racquetball courts, fitness room, and other facilities. The Carroll Baseball Stadium hosts a number of games, ranging from high school tournaments to college and semi-pro games. Annual events include Carroll Band Day and the Swan Lake Summer Wrap-Up.

Like sports, the outdoors, and the small-town lifestyle? Then Carroll could be the perfect place for you!
