Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Cedar Rapids is located in east central Iowa, about 31 miles (50 kilometers) north of Iowa City and 131 miles (211 kilometers) northeast of Des Moines. It is the county seat of Linn County, and home to 120,758 residents.

The city has a number of fine museums, including the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, the African American Historical Museum, and the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library. For a journey through the past, visit the Karl and Mary Koehler History Center, which features 35,000 artifacts and a "time machine" that recreates a 3-D virtual environment of historic Cedar Rapids. Other historic delights include Brucemore, a beautiful 1886 mansion whose grounds serve as the backdrop for various music festivals, outdoor theater performances, and other special events. Also be sure to visit the Ushers Ferry Historic Village, a recreated turn-of-century village containing more than 30 buildings.

For some family fun, visit the Iowa Children's Museum, the Science Station, or Lost Island Adventure Park, the largest water park in the state.

Cedar Rapids also offers a full array of arts and culture attractions, including the Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra, Riverside Theatre, and Theatre Cedar Rapids.

Outdoor recreation is available year-round in and around the city. Many beautiful recreational trails, such as the Cedar Valley Nature Trail and the Sac and Fox Trail, are within easy access of the city. Visit the Indian Creek Nature Center for fun and educational programs, or to enjoy the 11 miles (18 kilometers) of paths that wind through prairie, woodland, and wetland habitats. Coralville Lake and Lake Macbride State Park are great places to spend the weekend, and both offer boating, fishing, swimming, picnicking, and camping facilities.
