Charleston, South Carolina

There's a lot of history in and around beautiful, coastal Charleston, South Carolina. But with a more than 300-year-old heritage, what else can be expected?

The picturesque city is often called a "living museum" because of its beautifully preserved – and still used – houses, commercial buildings, and narrow historic streets. For military enthusiasts, there is Fort Moultrie, which was the site of the first decisive patriot victory of the American Revolution, and there is Fort Sumter, which was the scene of the first shots of the Civil War. And you can always head off to the countryside to a plantation, like Middleton Place or Drayton Hall.

Like the Arts? Check out the Addison Hatfield Gallery, Carolina Galleries, or Charlestown Museum – the first museum in the US. Attend a show at the Charleston Stage or by the Footlight Players. Listen to a performance of the Charleston Symphony. (And speaking of the Arts, some would say that the best thing about Charleston is that it's the hometown of Stephen Colbert!)

Have kids? Get out to the South Carolina Aquarium. If you have less squeamish kids (and can handle the trip yourself), head out to Edisto Island Serpentarium to learn all about reptiles. Spend some time at a sun-drenched beach. Head to one of the Charleston County Parks, such as the Charleston Waterfront Park, a revitalized public park where you can stroll the green or pier, enjoy a picnic with your family, or go camping at nearby Francis Marion National Forest.

The pleasant weather – January averages of 32F and July averages of 75F – means that you can enjoy the great outdoors, whether on water or land. Since you're in Charleston, why not head off to a world-class golf course. After all, Charleston was the site of America's first golf course and golf club: in 1786, the South Carolina Golf Club and Harleston Green were founded in what is now downtown Charleston.

Southern charm, a sense of history, and pleasant weather live here – and you can, too.
