Chesapeake, Virginia

Chesapeake is located in an area whose history goes back to the late 1600s and Virginia's colonial past, but the city itself is relatively new, having been created in 1963, when the former independent city of South Norfolk was consolidated with Norfolk County. Now, the city of Chesapeake is a part of a large metro area known as the Hampton Roads metropolitan area, or more officially, the "Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, VA-NC Metropolitan Statistical Area." Chesapeake is located just across the Eastern Branch Elizabeth River from Norfolk.

When you want to get out, the city has 10 scenic parks, including the 763-acre (309-hectare) Northwest River Park, which has camping areas, an extensive trail system, picnic and play areas, an equestrian area, fishing, miniature golf, and more. The city has two golf courses, and is also home to the 47-acre (19-hectare) Chesapeake Arboretum. Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses 111,000 acres (44,920 hecates) of forested wetlands, is just south of town. And the Virginia Beach Oceanfront is about a 20-mile (32-kilometer) drive east, while the Outer Banks of North Carolina are about two hours drive south.

All of the modern and historical attractions of Norfolk are right at residents' doorsteps, and even more history can be found 40 miles (64 kilometers) north at Colonial Williamsburg, the world's largest living history museum.
