Chillicothe, Ohio

Chillicothe is set along the Scioto River, in south central Ohio, in Ohio's Appalachian Country. It's the county seat of Ross County, and is located 47 miles (76 kilometers) south of the capital, Columbus, and 97 miles (156 kilometers) east of Cincinnati. The community was founded in 1796, and is known as Ohio's First Capital.

There are plenty of things for the outdoor enthusiast to do in Ohio's Appalachian Country, which boasts 33 state parks, 21 state forests, 11 state nature preserves, one national park, and one national forest! To pick a few of these, there are: Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, which has remnants of the Hopewell culture, which flourished from about 200 BCE to 500 CE; Wayne National Forest, the only national forest in Ohio, with 300 miles (482 kilometers) of trails; Great Seal State Park, with camping facilities, trails, and more; and Paint Creek State Park, with camping and picnicking facilities, a sandy beach, and more. And from the city you can set off to hike the Tri-County Triangle Trail, which follows the route of a former railroad.

In town, when warm weather comes, you can cheer at a home game of the Chillicothe Paints of baseball's Frontier League. If you have a more dramatic personality, you can take in a performance of the Magic Waters Theatre or Tecumseh! "the ultimate outdoor drama experience." You can also get out and meet your neighbors while enjoying community events like the Feast of the Flowering Moon celebration each May, the Ross County Fair in August, or the Southern Ohio Storytelling Festival in September.
