Chilliwack, British Columbia

Chilliwack is the third-oldest municipality in British Columbia, and although it is 100 kilometers (62 miles) east of Vancouver, it is very much a part of the Greater Vancouver economic region. Its proximity to mountains and rivers, and its rich cultural history, ensures that this small city will please just about anyone.

Extreme sport enthusiasts – be they mountain bikers, mountain climbers, or backcountry skiers – will find a variety of venues for risking life and limb. From knowing what to expect on the named trails of Vedder Mountain to embracing the thrill of the unknown on the many unnamed trails of the Tamihi, Liumchen, and Fraser valleys, hard-core bikers can keep their bones rattling for years. Mountaineers can take on one of North America's 50 toughest technical ascents when they go for broke on Mount Slesse's 900-meter (2,952 foot) east face. And with all these mountains in the area, come winter you know there is plenty of backcountry and adventure skiing to be had. Chilliwack is also the sports fishing center of the Fraser Valley, where fighting fish like sturgeon, steelhead trout, and salmon are abundant.

If you'd rather pit your skills against your fellow man than against nature, you can wage battle on almost a dozen different golf courses in the region … there's even one in the style of a 1930's logging camp. And with Chilliwack's mild climate, you can play almost year-round.

But Chilliwack isn't just about the physical pursuits. There is plenty available for those interested in cultural pursuits. You can learn about the first inhabitants of the area at a powwow and the Cultus Lake Indian Festival or find your groove at the Chilliwack Bluegrass Festival. And for those looking to expand their culinary horizons, there are plenty of local farmers in the area and many of them will sell the fruits (and vegetables) of their labors right at the farm gates.
