The Native American community of Chinle is located at the geographic center of the Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona. Chinle is located approximately 232 miles (373 kilometers) east of Grand Canyon National Park. The nearest communities of size are Flagstaff, 213 miles (343 kilometers) to the southwest, and Albuquerque, 229 miles (368 kilometers) to the southeast. The community acts as the entranceway to the Canyon de Chelly National Monument. The monument covers an area of 83,840 acres (33,928 hectares) and is home to more than 2,700 archeological sites related to Native American culture, dating from 350 CE to 1300 CE. Its most spectacular natural feature is Spider Rock, an 800-foot (244-meter) sandstone spire that juts out of the canyon floor. Other natural wonders located relatively close to Chinle are the Petrified Forest National Park and Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. Community facilities in Chinle itself include a Tribal Chapter House, a community center and gym, and the Tseyi Shopping Center, which houses retail shops, as well as medical and government offices.
