Clackamas, Oregon

Clackamas is a census-designated area in northwestern Oregon, located just 16 miles (26 kilometers) southeast of Portland. The community is part of Clackamas County, and home to 5,177 people.

Clackamas derived its unusual name from a Native American tribe. The community is small and friendly, and offers some wonderful local attractions. History buffs should pay a visit to the Oregon Military Museum, which gives a fascinating look at the area's military heritage. The Clackmas Town Center is the community's major shopping and entertainment venue, and offers a movie theater, restaurants, major stores and 1.2 million square feet (110,000 square meters) of retail space.

Surrounded by great natural beauty, Clackamas offers abundant recreational opportunities. Golfers will enjoy playing a round at the Sah-Hah-Lee Golf Course, a scenic 18-hole course situated on the banks of the Clackamas River. Boating, biking, horseback riding, swimming, and hiking are all popular activities, and the adventurous can even try their hand at skydiving or ballooning.

The majestic Mount Hood is the area's best natural attraction, and offers plenty to do and see all year-round. Only an hour's drive southeast of Clackamas, the Mount Hood National Forest offers fantastic hiking, fishing, and wildlife-viewing, and is also home to the Bagby Hot Springs. In the winter, four fantastic ski resorts (the Meadows Ski Resort, Skibowl, The Resort at the Mountain, and Timberline) guarantee a season of fun for skiers and snowboarders.
