Clarksville, Tennessee

Clarksville is located in northern Tennessee, just east of the Fort Campbell Military Reservation, 26 miles (42 kilometers) southeast of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, and 46 miles (74 kilometers) northwest of Nashville. It is the seat of Montgomery County, and is home to 103,455 people.

Clarksville is located on the bank of the Cumberland River, so you'll have no shortage of opportunities for fishing, boating, and watersports. The city's River District is a favorite destination, and includes an amphitheater, performance stages, fishing wharf, playground, and the scenic RiverWalk promenade. Newcomers should also check out the Cumberland RiverCenter, which tells the story of how Clarksville became one of the great Southern River Towns.

Dunbar Cave State Park is located just outside of Clarksville, and was named after a cave so spacious that it once hosted square dances, radio shows, and big band concerts! This historic building was erected in 1898 as a Post Office and Customs House for the region's booming tobacco trade. Today the old customs house contains rotating exhibits on science, art, and history, galleries, a sculpture garden, and an Explorer's Floor with interactive activities for kids.

Clarksville's historic downtown contains 52 heritage sites, along with antique shops, boutiques, restaurants, and nightspots. A few highlights include the 1890 L&N Train Station, the 1858 Smith-Trahern Mansion, the Emerald Hill Mansion, and the Public Square, which contains the old City Hall building and an eternal flame. Newer landmarks include a bronze statue of Olympic athlete and local Wilma Rudolph, and the Montgomery County Courts Complex, which was rebuilt following a 1999 tornado.

Ready for a night on the town? The Roxy Regional Theatre offers 10 great productions each year, and the Cumberland Arts Centre offers dinner theater entertainment. Art buffs will want to pay a visit to Austin Peay State University's three galleries, which exhibit works by both students and renowned artists. Beachaven Vineyards and Winery offers excellent local vintages, along with musical entertainment during Jazz on the Lawn performances. For a change of pace, head to the Clarksville Speedway for thrilling drag racing events.
