Columbus, Mississippi

Columbus, Mississippi, is located near the Alabama state border, 114 miles (183 kilometers) west of Birmingham. It is the county seat of Lowndes County, and home to 25,944 residents.

One of the Columbus' best features is its downtown district, which offers many historic buildings, unique shops, and fine restaurants. It's also the site of the annual Market Street Festival, which draws more than 40,000 participants with great music, art, and food. Another major annual festival is the Tennessee Williams Tribute Weekend, held each September to honor the famous playwright and Columbus native. You'll also want to tour the city's many African American heritage sites and historic homes. Highlights include Tennessee Williams' birthplace, and the 1847 home of General Stephen D. Lee, who ordered the first shot of the Civil War to be fired.

For a great evening's entertainment, check the Columbus Arts Council website for the latest concerts, plays, and gallery exhibits. You can also enroll for classes or purchase pieces for your own collection at the Rosenzweig Arts Center. If that's not your idea of fun, Columbus also offers thrilling weekly races at Magnolia Motor Speedway and Columbus Speedway – "the baddest bullring in the South."

Situated on the Tombigbee and Luxapalila rivers, Columbus is a haven for boating, watersports, fishing, and hunting enthusiasts. Golfers have the Green Oaks and Whispering Pines golf clubs, while Lake Lowndes State Park offers tennis, football, and softball facilities, along with a huge lake for fishing and boating. Another great outdoor destination is the Plymouth Bluff Center. Once an ancient inland sea, the area contains an abundance of fossils, and visitors can view specimens dating back to the Cretaceous and Pleistocene eras. The site is also home to many modern-day animals like deer, armadillos, and other woodland creatures, which you might spot while exploring the center's many nature trails.

Offering classic southern delights like historic architecture, great food, and friendly neighbors, Columbus is waiting for you to discover!
