Concord, North Carolina

The city of Concord is located in southern North Carolina, just 21 miles (34 kilometers) northeast of Charlotte. It is the county seat of Cabarrus County, and home to 55,977 people.

Downtown Concord is home to many of the city's finest attractions, including the Old Courthouse Theatre, the Historic Cabarrus County Courthouse, and many restored heritage buildings. It's also home to the beautiful Memorial Gardens, where you can see 14,000 tulips and other bulb plants burst into bloom each spring, or walk through the tranquil grounds of a 200-year-old cemetery. The city's downtown also hosts many special events, including the Union Street Live concert series.

Local museums include the Concord Museum, which houses a variety of artifacts, memorabilia, and historical and genealogical materials. The Carolinas Boxing Hall of Fame, located at the Lowe's Motor Speedway, is another notable attraction, and honors 131 individuals who have made their mark in this sport. The Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site is a must-see site, and is located just 15 miles (24 kilometers) south of Concord. Gold was discovered here in 1799, making it the first documented gold find in the United States. The find sparked off the North Carolina gold rush, and the state led the nation in gold production until it was eclipsed by the California Gold Rush in 1848. Visitors can explore the restored underground tunnels, see exhibits of mining equipment and an ore-crushing stamp mill, and explore the scenic trails that wind through the area.

Motorsports are a local passion, and you'll find thrilling races at Lowe's Motor Speedway, Concord Motorsports Park, and Chip Ganassi Racing. Youngsters can get behind the wheels themselves at NASCAR Speedpark, or enjoy arcade games, mini-golf, bumper boats, and a variety of other activities.

Other attractions in Concord include the Cabarrus Arena and Events Center and Concord Mills, North Carolina's top shopping and entertainment complex. Looking for a day of family fun? Take the kids to Jeepers, an indoor center with amusement park rides, a playground, and dozens of games designed for children 12 or younger. Concord is also home to the Cabarrus County Fair, which offers nine days of midway rides, agricultural and livestock competitions, concerts, performances, and family fun each September.

For some outdoor recreation, head to Frank Liske Park. This park offers a lake for boating and fishing, mini golf, nature trials, and facilities for tennis, baseball, horseshoes, and volleyball. Concord is also home to two beautiful 18-hole golf courses: The Green Oaks Golf Club and the Rocky River Golf Club.
