Cornwall, Ontario

For many years, the soldiers of the First Battalion King's Royal Regiment fought on behalf of Britain in the American Revolutionary War. But when they lost, they found a better life in Cornwall, Ontario.

As a result of this history as a United Empire Loyalist town, Cornwall is a long-established city and has, in addition to its historical British community, a vibrant Francophone community. Large numbers of Francophones began coming to the city in the late 19th century to take up jobs at the local textile and paper mills. Since then, the Francophone presence has remained strong, and almost 50% of the population is bilingual.

With the St. Lawrence River nearby, the area has numerous recreational opportunities. The fishing, in particular, is excellent. As well, you can spot wildlife and take in the scenery along the 75-kilometer (47 mile) St. Lawrence Recreational Path. The area's lakes and rivers also feature excellent canoeing opportunities.

Cornwall has a combination of small-town and big-city lifestyles. For small town atmosphere, check out a game of the local junior hockey team, the Cornwall Colts, or catch a play at one of the many community theaters, including the Aultsville Theatre and Glen Productions. Big-city amenities include shopping (such as at Cornwall Square), an excellent school system, and good public transit. Still, for those who want a truly big city experience, Montreal and Ottawa are just over an hour away by car. But, you won't need to leave very often. Cornwall has all you need.
