Covington, Louisiana

The city of Covington is located in southern Louisiana, on the Bogue Falaya River, and north of Lake Pontchartrain. It is situated 35 miles (56 kilometers) north of Metairie, 42 miles (68 kilometers) north of New Orleans, and 65 miles (105 kilometers) east of Baton Rouge. Covington is part of St. Tammany Parish, and is home to 8,483 people.

Founded in 1813, the community was named after General Leonard Covington, and was a resort during the 19th century. Modern-day Covington retains its turn-of-the-century charm, and the city's historic downtown offers fine art galleries, antique shops, one-of-a-kind stores, and trendy cafes. Fancy Faces is one example of a business you won't find anywhere else. This store specializes in fantastic and unique ceramic masks, which are used for performances, Mardi Gras, and other special occasions. Want to see what store shelves were stocked with in the past? The Insta-Gator Ranch & Hatchery is home to more than 2,000 alligators, and encourages visitors to "hold, catch and hatch" these fascinating reptiles. Covington is also known for its fine beers, and grownups can enjoy a tour and tasting session at the Abita Brewing Company or the Heiner Brau Microbrewery & Museum. The Covington Country Club is always a popular attraction, and offers a beautiful golf course, tennis courts, a swimming pool, and boat launches on the Bogue Falaya River.
