Crystal City is located in an agricultural region in Jefferson County, approximately 35 miles (56 kilometers) south of St. Louis. The city is set along the Mississippi River, which marks Missouri's border with Illinois. Crystal City's development – and its name – are thanks to the glass making industry, and it was once home to the largest plate glass plant in the world, Crystal City Works Nine, which closed in 1990. Crystal City, and its close neighbor to the west, Festus, together constitute a twin city area. The city provides residents with a quiet hometown atmosphere. A number of city parks are available for walking, biking, jogging, or simply relaxing. And Jefferson County is itself home five public conservation areas, in addition to two state historic sites, Sandy Creek Covered Bridge State Historic Site and Mastodon State Historic Site.
