Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

Dartmouth is located in the province of Nova Scotia, just five kilometers (three miles) from downtown Halifax. The community was founded in 1750, and became part of the Halifax Regional Municipality in 1996.

The Dartmouth Heritage Museum is located in the historic Evergreen House, and proudly displays exhibits related to the natural and cultural history of the area. A walking tour of the community is another great way to learn about Dartmouth's rich history, and highlights along the route include historic churches, homes, canals, and locks. The oldest surviving structure is the Quaker House, which was built by William Ray in 1786. The Heritage Trail will also lead you to several recreational spots, including the Leighton Dillman Scenic Garden and a multi-use trail that connects Halifax Harbour to Lake Charles. Lake Banook is a popular spot for swimming and boating, and has hosted world-class canoeing and paddling competitions. Dartmouth's borders also encompass 22 other lakes, earning it the nickname "The City of Lakes" and inspiring a song of the same name from musician Matt Mays. Dartmouthians also know how to look on the lighter side of life, and the community is the filming locale for the hit Canadian comedy show the Trailer Park Boys.
