Delaware

In some ways, when you think about Delaware, you can think small. It's the second-smallest state. Delaware is known as The First State for having been the first of the original 13 states to ratify the Constitution – and one is a small number. Delaware's population, at only about 783,000, makes it the 45th in size of all the US states. And there's another nickname for Delaware: The Small Wonder!

Some people don't like to be called small, so how about thinking of it as cozy? But even if you're not into being cozy 100% of the time, Delaware's location is unbelievably convenient. Located on the East Coast of the US, the state is bordered by Delaware Bay and the Atlantic on the east, by the states of New Jersey to the northeast, by Pennsylvania to the north, and by Maryland to the south and west. You're only about a two-hour drive from major centers such as Baltimore, Washington, DC, and Philadelphia.

But don't discount the little guy! For the outdoor enthusiast, Delaware offers four distinct seasons in which to have fun. Summers are usually quite hot and humid – with temperatures above 90F (32C) possible, plus humidity – but thanks to the coast things are usually moderated by breezes. The coastal areas are also warmer in the winter when temperatures average from of 23 to 43F (-7 to -5C).

On your days off, you can spend your time near or on the water: on the beach, fishing or sailing, or strolling a wharf or boardwalk. You can go golfing at one of the many public or private golf courses. Why not visit one of the 14 state parks, such as Brandywine Creek State Park, with your family or friends and hike, camp, cycle, picnic, canoe, kayak, or fish. Or, you and your kids can tour some of the many historic homes and settlements, such as the Winterthur Museum in the Winterthur, the Zwaanendael Museum in Lewes, or Woodburn, the Governor's Mansion in Dover. The kids would also enjoy the Delaware Toy & Miniature Museum in Wilmington.

With or without the kids, you can take in a theatrical performance at the University of Delaware Professional Theatre in Newark or the Three Little Bakers Dinner Theatre, City Theater Company, Playhouse Theatre, Delaware Children's Theater, Delaware Theatre Company, and the Wilmington Drama League in Wilmington.

Or experience a symphony, opera, comedy, or jazz performance at The Grand Opera House in Wilmington. Attend a performance of the Dover Symphony Orchestra or check out the Ballet Theatre of Dover. Gamblers will want to visit the Delaware Park Racetrack & Slots in Wilmington.

The state's economic base is varied, and includes manufacturing (e.g., chemicals, plastics, food, paper), mining, metals, agriculture, and fishing. Many major banks also have their credit card operations in Delaware. So when you're off work, don't leave the state – stay home and shop at a local mall or a flea market: Delaware has no sales tax! And that's no small saving!
