Denton, Texas

Denton is located on the northern edge of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area, about 39 miles (63 kilometers) northwest of Dallas and 39 miles (63 kilometers) northeast of Fort Worth. It is the county seat of Denton County, and home to 80,537 residents.

First incorporated in 1866, Denton has a long and interesting history. You can learn about the city's heritage by visiting the Denton County Historical Museum, the Bayless-Selby House Museum, and the historic sites and modern businesses found in the city's downtown center. One of the highlights of downtown Denton is the Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum, which houses a variety of exhibits regarding the people and history of Denton County.

Motor sports seems to be a local obsession, and you'll find thrilling races at the Denton Dragway and the Texas Motor Speedway, located just 14 miles (23 kilometers) south of the city. For aspiring racers, there's the North Texas Karters, which offers a half-mile track and kart racing for children as young as five. Looking for more family fun? Try the Sky Theater Planetarium, or the Water Works, a waterpark that offers a tubing river, play pool, and four giant water slides.

Thanks to the presence of the University of North Texas and the Texas Woman's University, Denton is home to a vibrant arts and cultural scene. Great plays can be found at five university-operated theaters, and at the Campus Theatre, which is managed by the Denton Community Theater. You can view fine art at a number of university galleries, and at the Center for the Visual Arts, operated by the Greater Denton Arts Council.

Denton's diverse music scene is formed by students from the University of North Texas music programs, artists who've relocated to the city, touring musicians, and an enthusiastic pool of local listeners. Jazz, rock, experimental, intermedia, and independent music are just a few of the genres you'll hear in Denton's many clubs and pubs. A popular destination is the Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios, a cement factory that has been converted into a studio, bar, and live music venue.
