For striking scenery and distinctive culture, you need look no further than this hamlet in north central Alberta. The population is 1,114 in Wabasca and 112 in neighboring Desmarais. With its beautiful lakes and forests, it's no surprise that Wabasca-Desmarais is a huge draw for visitors – so huge that, in addition to oil and forestry, tourism is one of its main industries.

And there's plenty to keep you busy, whether you're a local or a visitor. There's camping and fishing in the Wabasca Recreational Area. In February, the hamlet holds its annual Brian Young Hockey Tournament and its Lion's Club Snowmobile Poker Rally. In the summer, you can participate in the RCMP Fish Derby or the Canada Day Beach Volleyball Tournament.

With its year-round activities and surrounded by Bigstone Cree First Nation Indian reserves – 58% of the residents in Wabasca-Desmarais report Cree as their mother tongue – Wabasca-Desmarais is definitely a fascinating place to live.
