Digby, Nova Scotia

Whether you call it the Scallop Capital of the World or the most romantic place in Canada, either way, this town on the Bay of Fundy offers a seaside lifestyle rich in history and strong in community values.

Located in northwestern Nova Scotia, this town of 2,111 lives by the sea – literally and figuratively! To get a closer look at the draggers that brave the Bay of Fundy's roaring waters to bring back scallops, halibut, and mackerel, head to the fishing wharf. Often, you'll also spot people shucking scallops on the docks. As no mechanical methods have yet been developed, shucking scallops by hand remains a fishing culture tradition. You can try your own hand at shucking scallops during Scallop Days, Digby's big annual festival. With a Queen's Ball, gear-knitting competitions, and a spectacular parade of scallop fleets across the harbor, the event is a truly unique maritime experience.

Digby is surrounded by beauty. The harbor area features a stunning walkway, where you can enjoy romantic evenings under colorful skies. Or head to Digby Neck, located just beyond Digby, a peninsula that stretches into the Bay of Fundy. Home to several picturesque, secluded islands, it is rich in wildlife, in particular, people come to see the whales – minke, humpback, pilot, and finback are the most common whale species that can be seen from a boat tour. You may also spot seals, dolphins, and a vast array of bird species.

Digby's heritage sites include the Trinity Anglican Church, which dates back to 1785, and the Point Prim Lighthouse, which was built in 1817. The latter is situated on a set of high rocky cliffs that look out over the Bay of Fundy.

Let Digby – with its spectacular views of magnificent tides, hills, and the never-ending sea – inspire you!
