Durango is located in the southwestern corner of Colorado, 215 miles (346 kilometers) northwest of Albuquerque and 270 miles (435 kilometers) southwest of Pueblo. It is the seat of La Plata County, and is home to 13,922 people. For many people, Colorado is synonymous with skiing, and Durango is no exception. The Durango Mountain Resort is every skier's dream, and boasts 85 trails, 1,200 acres (486 hectares) of skiable area, and 260 inches, or 21.6 feet (660 centimeters, or 6.6 meters) of snowfall a year! Within the city, you can practice your skills on Chapman Hill, which also offers an excellent ice rink and concession stands. For an unforgettable journey into the past, drive 35 miles (56 kilometers) west to Mesa Verde National Park. Inhabited by the Ancestral Pueblo people from 600 to 1300 CE, this site features 600 cliff dwellings, mysterious petroglyphs, and thousands of artifacts. Mesa Verde is a designated United Nations World Heritage Site. You can also enjoy whitewater rafting tours on the Animas and Dolores Rivers, find outdoor adventure in the San Juan National Forest, or soak your cares away at the Trimble Hot Springs. In addition to outdoor recreation, Durango also offers many historic and cultural delights. You can visit the Animas Museum to learn about local history, or experience it first-hand by riding aboard one of Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad's steam-powered locomotives. Other attractions include the Children's Museum of Durango and the Grand Motorcar and Piano Collection. Durango's historic downtown is full of Old West spirit, and also offers a great array of shops, restaurants, and events. The visual arts flourish at the Durango Arts Center and the city's many galleries. The San Juan Symphony offers excellent concerts and more great shows can be found at the Abbey Theatre and Fort Lewis College's Community Concert Hall. For some unique family entertainment, try a delightfully over-the-top performance by Diamond Circle Melodrama and Vaudeville. Durango's yearly roster of special events include the Snow Down Winter Festival, Animas River Days, Music in the Mountains, the Durango Cowboy Gathering, and the Taste of Durango. Winter or summer, indoors or out, you'll always find fun in Durango! See our 2 Jobs in Durango, Colorado Websites for this CityGovernment:
