East Lansing, Michigan

East Lansing is located just a few miles east of the Michigan state capital, Lansing. This community of 46,525 is best known as the home of the 5,000-acre (2,023-hectare) campus of Michigan State University, which is one of the largest public universities in the United States. The city itself grew around the campus, and the community's first houses, known as Faculty Row, were built on the MSU campus in the 1850s.

Not surprisingly, residents enjoy the vibrant lifestyle of a college town, and have many events on and off campus to enjoy, including college sports (the MSU team is the Spartans), a pile of college-oriented businesses, including coffee shops, bars, restaurants, and bookstores, and a range of festivals, including the East Lansing Film Festival, East Lansing Art Festival , and the Great Lakes Folk Festival.

The campus is also a great place for East Lansing residents to enjoy nature, as it's the home of the five-acre (two-hectare) W.J. Beal Botanical Garden, which is home to more than 5,000 kinds of plants, and is believed to be the oldest continually-maintained university botanical garden in the United States.
