Easton, Maryland, is located east of Chesapeake Bay, 41 miles (66 kilometers) southeast of Annapolis and 70 miles (113 kilometers) southeast of Baltimore. The town is the seat of Talbot County, and is home to 11,708 people. Easton was founded in 1711. It is the home of many historic "firsts" on the Eastern Shore, including the first newspaper, first bank, first gas plant, and the first steamer line to Baltimore. The Historical Society of Talbot County offers guided tours of three 18th and 19th century buildings, along with a three-gallery exhibit on local history. Other notable attractions include the Talbot County Courthouse, the Little Red School House, Bullitt House, and the c. 1659 Third Haven Meeting House, which is believed to be the oldest surviving religious meeting building in America. The Academy Art Museum houses five galleries of fine art, and also hosts a variety of performing arts events. The museum offers 250 programs each year, which attracts 65,000 participants. The Historic Avalon Theatre is another cultural gem, and offers a full roster of concerts, shows, and community events. Little Ashby Vineyards is the first and only licensed winery on Maryland's Eastern Shore, and welcomes visitors for tours and tastings. Golfers can tee off at a number of excellent local courses, while Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries offer fantastic sailing, kayaking, crabbing, and fishing. The Pickering Creek Audubon Center encompasses 400 acres (162 hectares) of natural lands, and offers a number of fun and educational events. Tuckahoe State Park promises recreational opportunities on both land and water. A large lake offers great fishing, boating, and canoeing, and miles of scenic trails can be used for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Life in Easton is everything small-town living should be!
