Edmond, Oklahoma

The City of Edmond is located in central Oklahoma, just 14 miles (23 kilometers) north of Oklahoma City. It is part of Oklahoma County, and home to 68,315 residents.

Edmond began life as a cattle town and railroad stop, and was once part of the Chisholm Trail. To learn more about the city's past, visit the Edmond Historical Society and Museum. Housed in a 1936 armory, the museum features permanent exhibits on local pioneers, the military, and railroad history, and also offers a hands-on center for children. Other heritage buildings include Edmond's first public schoolhouse, Gracelawn Cemetery, and Memorial Park Cemetery. You can also visit historic downtown Edmond for some combined shopping and sightseeing.

The University of Central Oklahoma is one of the main contributors to Edmond's arts and cultural scene, with several museums and art galleries located on campus. You'll also find regular performing arts events, such as concerts, musicals, plays, and dance productions. For more visual art delights, head to the Shadid Fine Art Gallery, take a class at the Edmond Fine Arts Institute, or admire the many works of public art located throughout the city. You'll can also enjoy great concerts by the Chopin Society, and outdoor musical and Shakespearean performances at local parks.

In addition to providing a scenic backdrop for theatrical productions, Edmond's city parks are also a great place for outdoor recreation. The 280-acre (113-hectare) Mitch Park features several sports fields and playgrounds, and Mathis Skate Park offers plenty of exciting challenges for skaters, roller-bladers, and bikers. Aspiring sports fans will want to pay a visit to Shannon Miller Park, which contains a bronze statue of the Olympic gymnast and Edmond native. Outside of the city, beautiful Arcadia Lake provides a wonderful spot for fishing, boating, and watersports. Still want more? Remember that you're only a short drive away from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, Frontier City amusement park, and all the other attractions of Oklahoma City.
