Elizabeth City, North Carolina

Elizabeth City is located in northeastern North Carolina, in the Inner Banks region, along the Pasquotank River, which flows into Albermarle Sound. The community, which is located in Pasquotank County, has a population of 17,188. Elizabeth City is located 45 miles (72 kilometers) south of Norfolk, Virginia, 166 miles (267 kilometers) northeast of Raleigh, and only about an hour northwest of the Outer Banks area, and its seafront communities such as Nags Head.

The community was founded as the town of Redding in 1793, and the name was changed to Elizabeth City in 1801. As a result of this long history, the community has six National Historic Register Districts with buildings and cemeteries to explore.

The city was a major shipping center in the 19th century, and is still known as The Harbor of Hospitality. The Albemarle Region in which Elizabeth City is located, is rich in agricultural land and in aquaculture, making these two industries significant parts of the local economy. The largest US Coast Guard Station on the east coast is just to the south of the city, making the station and affiliated industry, such as airship repair and manufacturing, another facet of the city's economy.

In town, there are a variety of ways for residents to entertain themselves, whether they want a dose of the arts, to watch a movie, enjoy a bit of go-cart racing, or go shopping, whether downtown, at the waterfront, or at a shopping center.

When locals want to enjoy the outdoors, they have many options. In and around Elizabeth City can be found more than 10 golf courses. A short drive north of Elizabeth City, bordering North Carolina and Virginia, is Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses 111,000 acres (44,920 hectares) of forested wetlands, and which includes the 3,100-acre (1,254-hectare) Lake Drummond. The refuge is a great place for hiking, biking, boating, and watching wildlife. And when sun and surf call, Cape Hatteras National Seashore is only a couple hours drive southeast.
