Elizabethtown, Kentucky

 

Elizabethtown (aka Etown) is city of 22,542 in central Kentucky. It is the seat of Hardin County, and is located directly south of Fort Knox and 44 miles (71 kilometers) south of Louisville.

The Hardin County History Museum has a great collection of artifacts from the region's pioneer days, and the Black History Gallery highlights the contributions African Americans. Car buffs will love the Swopes Cars of Yesteryear Museum, whose collection ranges from a 1910 Brush to a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro, and also includes Rolls Royces, a Ford Model T, and other famous vehicles. The Schmidt Museum of Coca-Cola Memorabilia has 8,000 square feet (743 square meters) of exhibit space devoted to the world's most famous beverage, and boasts equipment from turn-of-the-century bottling works, antique Coke delivery trucks, vintage vending machines, signs, paraphernalia, and more.

Elizabethtown was an important outpost during the Civil War, and witnessed a battle on December 27, 1862. A cannonball became was embedded in the Depp Building, and visitors can still be seen to this day. (The Depp Building was damaged by fire in 1887, and the cannonball was rescued from the rubble and put back into the reconstructed building.) Other heritage attractions include the 1825 Brown Pusey House and the One Room Schoolhouse. Abraham Lincoln's parents once lived in the area, and the Lincoln Heritage House preserves two log cabins built by the president's father Thomas Lincoln. The Sarah Bush Johnston Lincoln Memorial is a replica cabin built from century-old hand-hewn logs, and honors Abraham Lincoln's stepmother.

For some local culture, check out he latest concert or event at the Historic State Theater Complex, or take your little ones to a show at the Hardin County Schools Performing Arts Center. The city has even made it onto the silver screen, and was the setting and filming locale for the 2005 movie Elizabethtown.
