Evanston, Wyoming

Evanston is located in the southwestern corner of Wyoming, 78 miles (126 kilometers) northeast of Salt Lake City. It is the seat of Uinta County, and is home to 11,507 residents.

Evanston's history is closely tied to the development of the Union Pacific Railroad, which first began operating here in 1868. Depot Square is the city's premier heritage site, and includes the old Train Depot, the Uinta County Museum, and the Beeman-Cashin Building, where wagons, carriages, and farm equipment were repaired. Depot square is also home to the Chinese Joss House Museum, which tells the story of the Chinese miners and railroad workers who lived in the area from the 1870s to the 1930s. Tracks Across Wyoming connects the communities that lie along the transcontinental railroad's route, and is a great way of exploring the region's historic, cultural, and natural attractions.

Evanston residents enjoy a variety of outdoor pursuits, including fishing, hunting, boating, watersports, hiking, cycling, and golf. Winter brings ice fishing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing at Lily Lake. Evanston is the North American training base for the Jamaican Bobsled Team, whose unlikely existence inspired the 1993 movie Cool Runnings. A short drive will bring you to the bison and elk herds of Bear River State Park, the turquoise blue waters of Bear Lake, and the spectacular scenery of the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. And, of course, nearby there are outstanding opportunities for skiing, as "the Greatest Snow on Earth" is within an easy drive!
