Exeter, New Hampshire

Exeter, New Hampshire, is located near the Atlantic coast, 13 miles (21 kilometers) southwest of Portsmouth, 28 miles (45 kilometers) east of Manchester, and 53 miles (85 kilometers) north of Boston. The town has a population of 9,759, and is part of Rockingham County.

Exeter was founded in 1638, and was one of the four original towns of colonial New Hampshire. The town served as the capital of the new state during the Revolutionary War, and the American Independence Museum brings that time vividly to life. Most of the museum's collection is housed in the c. 1721 Ladd-Gilman House, and exhibits include an early draft of the US constitution, military paraphernalia, and Colonial-era artifacts. The museum also manages the c. 1775 Folsom Tavern, once the hub of political activity during the war, and now an interactive educational center. History buffs should also pay a visit to the Exeter Historical Society and Powder House, which housed munitions during the Battle of Bunker Hill and the War of 1812. Exeter is also home to the Phillips Exeter Academy, which was founded by John Phillips in 1781, and has produced famous graduates like writer Gore Vidal and humorist Robert Benchley.

During the summer, you can cool off with a swim at Exeter Recreation Park, or enjoy a variety of activities at Kingston State Park. Kingston State Park covers 44 acres (18 hectares), and offers swimming, a softball fields, horseshoes area, and volleyball courts. The New Hampshire Seacoast beckons with sandy beaches, busy ports, and rock-pounding surf … all found within 18 miles (29 kilometers) of coastline. Popular activities include harbor tours, sea kayaking, and exploring the historic resorts and villages.
