If you work in Washington, DC and want to avoid the trappings of city life, Falls Church is an ideal location to live. Located approximately 12 miles (19 kilometers) outside of the US capital, travel to and from DC is easily achieved via metro. Falls Church traces its heritage back to pre-colonial times; more than 12,000 years ago, it was a common encampment at the juncture of two trails used regularly by Native Americans. The city is named after a church that was built nearby a set of falls on the Potomac River. As English colonialists arrived in the 17th century, they brought with them a religious lifestyle rooted in the Anglican faith. While the name Falls Church can only be traced back to 1757, the community's local parish predates this time. Historical speaking, Truro Parish Vestrymen have included the likes of George Washington and George William Fairfax. This history is recognized today with the local transportation being known as the George. As a city, Falls Church was not fully established until 1948, when demand by local residents for a better schooling system and public infrastructure necessitated designation beyond township status. This movement is reflected in the city's current independent school system, Police Department, Volunteer Fire Department, water system, public library and Public Works Division. While many residents of Falls Church commute into Washington, DC for work, a number of high tech organizations are located in the immediate area. Although slightly more expensive than other communities in Greater DC, Falls Church is a beautiful place to live: stunning ancient trees decorate most front yards; many homes possess historic colonial architecture; parkland is abundant; the population is small, with only 10,377; the community offers a small-town feel and low levels of crime; and northern Virginia has four moderate seasons. Beyond experiencing a host of well-maintained cycle trails, boating on the Potomac River, or other outdoor pursuits, most residents head into Washington for entertainment. Here, some of the nation's best restaurants beckon, the Smithsonian museums wait to be explored, and cultural events are available at the Kennedy Center.
