Fayetteville, North Carolina

Fayetteville is located in central North Carolina, 64 miles (103 kilometers) south of Raleigh. It is the county seat of Cumberland County, and home to 121,015 residents.

Fayetteville is located in the beautiful Cape Fear Valley, and offers many recreational opportunities. Golf enthusiasts have several great local courses to choose from, and fishermen will be glad to be living next to the Cape Fear River. Another wonderful outdoor destination is the 85-acre (34-hectare) Cape Fear Botanical Gardens. Hikers can follow nature trails along lush riverbanks, up steep ravines, and through a pine forest; while those looking for a more relaxing experience can enjoy the beautiful flowerbeds and picturesque garden gazebo.

To learn about the history of the region, start at the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex, which houses artifacts from the prehistoric era to the present. In addition to the museum building, the complex also includes the late-Victorian Poe House and Arsenal Park, which contains the remnants of an 1836 US Arsenal. Have young children who hate museums? Take them to the Fascinate-U Children's Museum, where kids can learn naturally through role-playing, manipulating objects, and interacting with others.

Situated next to Fort Bragg and the Pope Air Force Base, Fayetteville is a city rich in military tradition. Fort Bragg offers museums, battle simulations, and statues for visitors, while Pope Air Force Base offers flight simulators and aircraft displays. Residents can also learn about the history of the US military at the Airborne and Special Operations Museum.

Looking for a great evening's entertainment? Check out one of the plays produced by the Cape Fear Regional Theatre or the Stage Door Theatre. For art buffs, the Fayetteville Museum of Art offers a remarkable collection of art, while the Arts Council of Fayetteville presents changing exhibits and photo galleries. The Arts Council is also responsible for organizing many special events, such as the International Folk Festival, and "A Dickens Holiday" Christmastime celebrations. Another fantastic annual event is the Fayetteville Dogwood Festival. Every spring, pink and white dogwood flowers bloom, and locals and visitors alike celebrate with midway rides, live music, a classic car show, and a host of other events.

Offering a diverse range of attractions all year round, Fayetteville is a wonderful place to call home!
