Ah, Florida! There's definitely a good reason for the slogan The Sunshine State on their license plates! The weather is always sunny and warm! Add that to all the beautiful beaches (home to three of the top 10 beaches in the US), the exciting theme parks, the countless golf courses, and the orange juice, and you have an amazing destination to live, especially when you have a few days off! Florida is a haven for sun worshippers, water-sport fanatics, and golfers. This state is the kind of place where you can work on a tan all year round, golf every day, and snorkel, scuba, windsurf, or boat to your heart's content! All these activities aren't limited to the 1,197 miles (1,926 kilometers) of coastline either, even though, wherever you live in the state, you are only a short drive from it. There are also more than 7,700 fresh water lakes in the state as well! Besides being a great place to live, Florida has a long and interesting history. Florida was "discovered" by Ponce de Lèon in 1521 (famous for his search for the Fountain of Youth), and the first European settlers were the Spanish at St. Augustine. To this date, there is still a large Hispanic population in the state. After a few wars and skirmishes with the British, and after the American Revolution, Florida was eventually ceded to the United States. The biggest metro area in Florida is the Tampa/ St. Petersburg/Clearwater area. The greater Tampa Bay area, located on the Gulf Coast, is home to two of the aforementioned three top ten beaches. It is also home to such attractions as Busch Gardens, the Florida Aquarium, the famous Tampa Latin Quarter (Ybor City) and, for you snowbirds, the Tampa Bay Lightning NHL team. On top of all that, there are also great galleries, like the Salvador Dali Museum, great nightlife, world-class shopping and world class dining. The second biggest, and arguably the most famous, is Miami. Miami is divided into several regions, each with a flavor all it's own: from Miami Beach, the hip beach hangout and, at night, a hopping club district, to South Beach with its art deco architecture and sidewalk cafés. In addition, you have Orlando, famous for the Magic Kingdom; Fort Lauderdale, which is a city of islands held together by canals and bridges and a spring break hotspot; Jacksonville, up north near the Florida/Georgia state line located on the beautiful St. John's river; and Ft. Myers, which was home to the winter homes of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. However, my personal favorite is Key West, on the west-end of the Florida Keys. Here, you're closer to Cuba than Miami. If you are a busybody, and not happy to be relaxed, avoid Key West, at all costs! Lazing away in a hammock while reading or writing will be a standard pastime. Remember to join in the daily event of celebrating the sunset with the other residents. It's quite the experience! See our 898 Jobs in Florida Discuss This ArticleHave something you'd like to say?
