The city of Florence is located in eastern South Carolina, 68 miles (109 kilometers) northwest of Myrtle Beach and 81 miles (130 kilometers) northeast of Columbia. It is the county seat of Florence County, and home to 30,248 people. Florence is the center of South Carolina's Pee Dee Region, which encompasses 10 counties in the Pee Dee River's lower watershed. The community was named after Florence Harllee, a general's daughter who brought the railway to the town. Florence's survival was tied to the railroad throughout the mid-1800s, and the town served as a major center for the transport of soldiers and supplies during the Civil War. To learn more, visit the Florence Railroad Museum, which is housed in a box car and caboose, and contains hundreds of artifacts and photos. Just two blocks away from the museum, you'll find the beautiful Locomotive Murals, which were painted by local artist Elvis Hatchell. The War Between the States Museum is another great attraction, and features a variety of artifacts from Civil War-era battlefields, campsites, and households, along with scale models of the Florence Stockade and the CSS Pee Dee. Lastly, be sure to visit the Florence Museum of Art, Science and History, which houses artifacts from the Pee Dee region and around the world. For some modern-day excitement, head to the Darlington Raceway, which served as a filming locale for the movie Days of Thunder. Also stop by the NMPA Stock Car Hall of Fame, which features memorabilia related to Joe Weatherly and other racing heroes, along with old stock cars, trophies, and illegal parts that were removed from racecars. For some family fun, head to Mister Marks Fun Park, which offers go-carts, a putting course, and a huge arcade with the latest games. Florence is also home to the annual May Fly Air Show, an aerial extravaganza featuring historic and contemporary aircraft, military planes, stunt flying, and sky diving. On the arts scene, there's the Florence Symphony Orchestra, the Florence Little Theatre, the Southeastern Bluegrass Association, and a wide variety of other professional and amateur arts organizations. The Florence Regional Arts Alliance promotes cultural events throughout the area, and also organizes exhibitions, competitions, and the annual ArtsFest. The Florence Civic Center is another hub of activity, and hosts everything from concerts and performances to shopping bonanzas and hockey games. When it comes to spectator sports, there's the Pee Dee Cyclones hockey team to cheer on during the winter, and the Red Wolves college baseball team to cheer on during the summer. Golfers can tee off at a number of beautiful courses located in Florence and throughout the Pee Dee Region, and a variety of recreational programs will help you stay fit and active. One of the city's most popular outdoor spots is Lynches River Park, where you can fish, swim, canoe, camp, and hike among the sand hills and cypress groves.
