Fond du Lac, Wisconsin

Fond du Lac, whose name comes from the French for "bottom of the lake" is located in eastern Wisconsin, on the southern tip of Lake Winnebago. This community of 42,203 is the county seat of Fond du Lac County. Fond du Lac is located 24 miles (39 kilometers) south of Oshkosh, 68 miles (109 kilometers) northwest of Milwaukee, and 73 miles (118 kilometers) northeast of Madison.

In town, you can stroll, dine, shop, or attend a community event in the downtown, or take in a performance of the Fond du Lac Symphonic Band, the Fond du Lac Concert Association, or the Fond du Lac Community Theatre. And in the summer, enjoy free outdoor Music Under the Stars and Buttermilk Festival concerts, both at Buttermilk Creek Park.

Fond du Lac has a four season climate, with January highs averaging 24F (-4C) and July highs averaging 81F (27C). Enjoy the area outdoors along the nearby multi-purpose state and county trails, including the Mascoutin Valley State Park Trail, Wild Goose State Trail, or Wiouwash State Trail, or along the city's own Northwestern Trail, Peebles Trail, or Village Trail. There are also county parks to explore, as well as wilderness areas, such as Kettle Moraine State Forest-Northern Unit, the Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area, and the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge.

If you enjoy a good road trip, head out on the scenic trip around the 137,700-acre (55,725-hectare) Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin's largest inland lake, and the second largest inland lake in the lower 48. The 88-mile (142-kilometer) route provides great scenery, the opportunity to stop and explore the various lakeside communities, and maybe even pause to go out on the water.
