Fort Collins, Colorado

Fort Collins is located in northern Colorado, 14 miles (23 kilometers) north of Loveland, 32 miles (52 kilometers) northwest of Greeley, and 63 miles (101 kilometers) north of Denver. It is the county seat of Larimer County, and home to 118,652 residents.

To learn about the city's past, visit the historic Avery House, or the Fort Collins Museum. The kids will be delighted by a trip to the Discovery Science Center, which offers more than 111 hands-on exhibits, or the Fort Fun amusement park, which features go-karts, miniature golf, and many other activities. For a unique family outing, head to the Swetsville Zoo, where all the "animals" are sculptures built from car parts, farm machinery, and scrap metal.

On the local arts scene, the Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art features two galleries with rotating exhibits, and is also home to the Center for Fine Art Photography. Wonderful music is provided by the Fort Collins Symphony, and a variety of performing arts events can be enjoyed at the Lincoln Center. Another great cultural venue is the Bas Bleu Theatre Company, which is situated on the site of the original military Fort, and offers plays, poetry, music, and art.

Nature lovers will feel right at home in Fort Collins. Lory State Park offers fabulous scenery and abundant wildlife, while Horsetooth Mountain Park provides an excellent site for hiking and horseback riding. Bird lovers should definitely visit the Rocky Mountain Raptor Center, which rehabilitates injured birds of prey and educates the public about these remarkable creatures. For a true wilderness adventure, head to the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, which encompasses 1.5 million acres (607,028 hectares) and stretches all the way to the Wyoming border.
