Fort Frances, Ontario

Think life in northern Ontario is all about cold temperatures and isolated wilderness? Think again! As the government and services center for Ontario's far northwestern area of Rainy River, Fort Frances is a bustling town offering a thriving economy, arts community, and culture.

With a population of about 8,315 people, Fort Frances is almost a city by northern Ontario standards. It has plenty of jobs in the public service, the retail sector, and the pulp-and-paper industry. The largest paper mill in the area, Abitibi-Consolidated Inc., employs about 800 people. The town also has an active arts and cultural community. Catch a play at the Little Theatre or the newly built Townshend Theatre. Or enjoy the music during the area's many arts festivals: the Rainy River District Festival of the Performing Arts, the Tour de Fort Concert Series, and the Border Concert Series make summer in Fort Frances a pleasure (the change in weather helps, too).

Life in the Rainy River region is strongly influenced by the First Nations culture; several native communities dot the surrounding area. You can experience this rich heritage at the Kay-Nah-Chi-Wah-Nung Historical Centre. Built in a riverbank and operated by the local Ojibway community, the center features drawings and exhibits showcasing native history, two reconstructed villages, and a roundhouse built in the traditional architectural style.

And being in northern Ontario, of course, the surrounding landscape is a big part of what makes Fort Frances so attractive. The Noden Causeway, a beautiful new walkway built along the waterfront on Rainy River, is a unique series of bridges that link a group of islands just east of the town. And, with gorgeous lakes, rivers, and forest areas at every turn, staying active is easy and a pleasure. Skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, boating, and swimming are just a few of the ways to enjoy the wilderness areas.

The excitement and diversity of the north are at your doorstep in Fort Frances.
