Fort Knox, Kentucky

Fort Knox, Kentucky, is a military reservation located near the Kentucky/Indiana state border. The fort is situated 15 miles (24 kilometers) north of Elizabethtown and 30 miles (48 kilometers) southwest of Louisville. Fort Knox has a population of 12,377 soldiers, family members, and civilians. The fort spans 109,000 acres (44,111 hectares) and four counties, with most of the population residing in Hardin County.

The fort was named after Henry T. Knox, a Revolutionary War general and former secretary of war. Most famously in popular culture, Fort Knox is synonymous with gold, though the actual Fort Knox Bullion Depository, which holds 147.3 million ounces (which is 9.2 million pounds or 4.2 million kilograms) of the US gold reserve, is on land that is no longer part of the fort. Fort Knox is home to the US Army Armor Center, the US Army Armor School, and the US Army Recruiting Command. Medical facilities include the Ireland Army Community Hospital, DENTAC, and a veterinary treatment facility.

Fort Knox offers a wide range of sports and leisure activities, including golf, aquatics, bowling, hunting, and fishing. Visit the French Shooting Club to improve your shot, or one of the fort's four fitness centers to help you stay in top form. The Leaders Club offers fine dining, and hosts banquets and special events. You can sing and dance the night away at the Rocker II Nightclub. The Patton Museum of Armor and Cavalry has fascinating exhibits on General Patton's accomplishments, the evolution of armor and armored weaponry, and other items such as a portion of the Berlin Wall.
