Fort Pierce, Florida

Fort Pierce is the county seat of Saint Lucie County, and is one of the oldest communities on the east coast of Florida. While it is located in the Port Saint Lucie metro area, it is it's own community with a population of 37,516. It has a quiet, neighborly feel, but is also close enough to the excitement of places like Orlando and West Palm Beach, if you need a little less "quiet."

Of course, that being said, don't assume there isn't anything to do in Fort Pierce, and that it's just a sleepy bedroom community. Downtown there's great shopping, dining, and entertainment. On the first Friday of every month, there is the Main Street Friday Fest, which is a bustling street festival. There's the historic Sunrise Theatre, if you need your Broadway fix. There's the Fort Pierce Jazz Society, if you need to be mellow and cool. If you're willing to range a bit away from downtown, you can even watch a jai-alai match. (Jai-alai is known as the world's fastest game, because the ball can travel at speeds close to 175 mph – or 281 kph!)

On a lazy weekend, why not go check out the area beaches, like at Fort Pierce Inlet. Or take a leisurely stroll through Heathcote Botanical Gardens. You could also brush up on your "tough guy" military history at the Navy SEAL Museum. Or, you could just take a cruise through the lagoon, and watch the manatees at the Manatee Observation & Education Center.
