The city of South Fulton lies less than one mile to the south, and the two communities are often called the "Twin Cities." Fulton is home to 2,775 residents, and is part of Fulton County. Both the city and the county were named after Robert Fulton, the inventor of the steamboat.

Fulton was formed around the Pontotoc Railroad Station in 1859, and became incorporated in 1895. The railroad industry continues to be an important part of the city's way of life, and Amtrak trains still make daily stops in the city. Agriculture, commerce, and other industries also form the backbone of the local economy.
