Gaithersburg, Maryland

Located in the heart of Montgomery County, Gaithersburg, Maryland, lies 26 miles (42 kilometers) northwest of Washington, DC.

The area was settled in 1765, and was incorporated in 1878. Named after an early settler, Benjamin Gaither, the city is now the second largest incorporated city in the state of Maryland. It's also one of the fastest growing communities on the East Coast.

Part of this has to do with the fact that the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), established in 1961, is located in Gaithersburg. The proximity of NIST has drawn companies from a variety of industry sectors, such as biotechnology, telecommunications, and software development, to the Gaithersburg area, and helped to establish the city's unique mixture of small town feel and cutting edge economy.

Gaithersburg is the site of the annual Montgomery County Agricultural Fair, and the city celebrates its heritage with its Old Towne Gaithersburg Day every September.

Outdoor recreation is available nearby, with Seneca Creek State Park a short drive away. The park encompasses an area of 6,300 acres (2,550 hectares), and extends along 14.75 scenic miles (23 kilometers) of Seneca Creek. Amenities at the park include camping facilities, as well as hiking and biking trails.
