Gallup, New Mexico

Gallup, the county seat of McKinley County, is located in western New Mexico, approximately 24 miles (39 kilometers) east of the Arizona border, along historic Route 66. Gallup is located 138 miles (222 kilometers) northwest of Albuquerque and 187 miles (300 kilometers) east of Flagstaff, Arizona.

Gallup is set on the high Colorado Plateau, at approximately 6,515 feet (2,637 meters) above sea level. The city has warm summers, with average highs in July at 89F (32C) and average lows in December and January at 11F (-12C). And if you want to enjoy the high desert climate, head out to hike the area at places like Pyramid Rock Trail or Church Rock Trail, or enjoy mountain biking or hiking along the High Desert Trail System.

The city is a few miles west of beautiful, 640-acre (259-hectare) Red Rocks State Park, which has several Anasazi archeological sites, dating between 300 to 1200 CE. (And if the red cliffs aren't colorful enough for you, the park is also home to the Red Rock Balloon Rally.) And about an hour's drive southeast are a large section of Cibola National Forest, which in full covers areas in northeastern New Mexico, western Oklahoma, and northwestern Texas, and the El Malpais National Monument and Conservation Area, which is home to several different ecosystems to explore.

Gallup is rich in Native American culture, and is located near Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni reservations. You can explore Native American history at sites like the Navajo Code Talkers Room, which commemorates the vital work performed by these servicemen during World War II, or the A'shiwi A'wan Museum and Heritage Center, which teaches about Zuni culture. You can also experience traditional dance performances during summer evenings at the Gallup Cultural Center (a project of the Southwest Indian Foundation) or at the annual Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial held in August.

A rich cultural heritage and great outdoor recreation are just two reasons to think about a move to Gallup.
