Georgetown, Texas

The city of Georgetown is located in central Texas, nine miles (14 kilometers) north of Round Rock and 27 miles (43 kilometers) north of Austin. It is the seat of Williamson County, and is home to 28,339 people.

Georgetown is situated on the San Gabriel River, and was named after landowner George Washington Glasscock. The Williamson County Historical Museum recounts the story of the region's early days, with exhibits on the Chisholm Trail, the Williamson County Courthouse, and the development of local communities. Southwestern University's Mood-Heritage Museum is another great place to learn about the past, and contains 5,000 items that range from Indian artifacts to early jazz records.

Looking for a great show? The Palace Theatre offers musicals, comedies, and dramas all year round. The Georgetown ISD Center for the Performing Arts hosts performances by the Georgetown Symphony Society, along with performances by the Southwestern University Orchestra and other community groups. You can also enjoy theater productions, musical performances, and art exhibits at Southwestern University's Sarofilm School of Fine Arts. The annual Red Poppy Festival heralds the arrival of spring, and is celebrated with a parade car show, a bike race, and live performances.

Georgetown is home to miles of riverfront trails and a number of lovely parks. Lake Georgetown covers 1,200 acres (486 hectares), and offers excellent fishing, swimming, boating, and waterskiing. The Blue Hole is a scenic lagoon on the South San Gabriel River, and a great place for a summertime dip. The Inner Space Caverns were sculpted by 80,000 years of geological forces, and contain astonishing rock formations that will delight any visitor.
