Goshen, New York

The town of Goshen is located 70 miles (113 kilometers) north of New York City, and is home to 5,676 residents. The town includes the Village of Goshen, which is the county seat of Orange County, and its surrounding areas (Durlandville, Finnegans Corner, Goshen Hills, Howell, Otter Kill, and Pellets Island).

The most well-known local sport is harness racing, a form of horse racing in which standardbred horses must run in a specified gait while pulling two-wheeled carts. Visitors can learn all about the fascinating history of this sport at the Harness Racing Museum, or catch an exciting race at Goshen's Historic Track.

Goshen is conveniently located near four state parks (Bear Mountain, Harriman, Goosepond Mountain, and Sterling Forest), which offer year-round recreational opportunities ranging from hiking and boating to ice fishing and cross-country skiing. Nature lovers should also pay a visit to the Orange County Audubon Society's sanctuary, which includes 62 acres (25 hectares) of marshes, and is one of the state's bird-watching hotspots. Rafting the Delaware River, or cruising down Hudson is another great way to spend the day.

The Museum Village is one of New York's largest living history museums, and recreates 19th century village life with 25 buildings and many costumed interpreters. Other great destinations include the Storm King Art Center, a 500-acre (202-hectare) outdoor sculpture park, the Museum of the Hudson Highlands, and many fine local wineries. Lastly, don't forget that the phenomenal shopping, dining, and arts and cultural attractions of the Big Apple are only one-and-a-half hours' drive away.
