Grand Rapids, Minnesota

The town of Grand Rapids, located along the Mississippi River in north central Minnesota, is the county seat of Itasca County. The community has previously been voted one of the 100 best small towns in America. Indeed, Grand Rapids likes to think of itself as offering residents a small town feel with big city amenities.

A number of festivals are held in Grand Rapids throughout the year, and help to solidify its community spirit. In August, the Tall Timber Days Festival includes canoe races, chain saw carving competitions, and a parade, and the town is also the site of the annual Itasca County Fair. Another festival of note in Grand Rapids is June's Judy Garland Festival. The famous actress was born in Grand Rapids, and is the focus of the town's own Judy Garland Museum.

The Reif Center is the center of Grand Rapids' cultural life, and home to the Itasca Orchestral Society and the Grand Rapids Players, both of which offer residents performances throughout the year.

And with the 1,000 Grand Lakes nearby, the getting out and enjoying Minnesota's great outdoors is easy. The Edge of the Wilderness National Scenic Byway offers everything from camping, hiking, and fishing in the summer, to skiing and snowmobiling in the winter. And the Great River Road runs near Grand Rapids, too. Of course, if you like more sedate outdoor activities, the town has four golf courses to keep you occupied.
