Greenbelt, Maryland

The city of Greenbelt is located in western Maryland, 14 miles (23 kilometers) northeast of Washington, DC, and 27 miles (43 kilometers) southwest of Baltimore. It is part of Prince George's County, and home to 21,456 people.

The city began its life during the Great Depression, when the federal government established a number of planned communities, or "Greenbelt towns" to provide jobs and affordable housing for citizens. For a quick overview of local history, visit the Greenbelt Museum or attend one of its bi-monthly lectures. Greenbelt is also home to three historic cemeteries, where you'll find the final resting places of the community's most honored and colorful former residents.

NASA's Goddard Visitors Center is one of Greenbelt's must-see attractions.
