Greensboro is located in central North Carolina, 29 miles (47 kilometers) east of Winston-Salem and 80 miles (129 kilometers) northwest of Raleigh. It is the county seat of Guilford County, and has a population of 223,891. Greensboro is home to five university and college campuses, and the student population has helped to shape the culture and feel of the city, as well as the fate of the nation. In 1960, four black students from the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University asked to sit in the "whites only" lunch counter at the local Woolworth's department store. When they were refused service, the students began a sit-in that lasted nearly six months, and helped to launch the American Civil Rights movement. The courageous act of these students is commemorated at the International Civil Rights Center & Museum. Other local museums include the Greensboro Historical Museum, and the Brock Historical Museum of Greensboro College. Just for kids, the city offers the Greensboro Children's Museum, or the Natural Science Center of Greensboro, a museum, planetarium, and zoo all in one facility. A large number of art museums and galleries can be found in Greensboro, including the Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art, the Weatherspoon Art Museum, the Guilford College Art Gallery, and the University Galleries of North Carolina A and T State University. Artists will find a home away from home at the Greensboro Cultural Center, which houses galleries, studios, and classrooms in a four-level complex. Greensboro is also home to the Eastern Music Festival, which treats audiences to a month of world-class musical performances each summer. And for performing arts, there are many options to choose from, including the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, the Greensboro Opera, the Bel Canto Company, and several theater groups. For some outdoor fun, visit the beautiful Greensboro Arboretum, or the Bog Garden, a combined nature preserve and botanical garden. You can also head to one of the city's many parks, or join a sports team, class, or recreational program organized by the Greensboro Parks & Recreation. And there are several golf courses and country clubs to enjoy. See our 16 Jobs in Greensboro, North Carolina Websites for this CityGovernment:
