Originally named Martinsborough after the Royal Governor Josiah Martin, Greenville was renamed in 1786 after the Revolution war hero General Nathanael Greene. Lying on the flood plains of North Carolina, Greenville is at the center of the state's farming community. With early development tied to the Tar River, in days of old, riverboats used to run cotton, tobacco, and peanuts through its waters to the ocean. Today the agricultural industry has expanded to include a variety of different fruits and vegetables. Easy access to excellent seafood and the close proximity of several of North Carolina's rising wineries ( Shelton Vineyards and Biltmore Estate) make Greenville an excellent place for food lovers. Dubbed as Sportstown USA by Sports Illustrated, Greenville has also hosted such major events as the 16 & Under Girls' Babe Ruth Softball World Series, the NC State Special Olympics Basketball Tournament and the Beast of the East Soccer Tournament. Between high school level sports and the East Carolina University Pirates, numerous games abound. Greenville is home to the East Carolina University and has a population of 60,476. Major employers include ASMO, Grady-White Boats, BACCO Materials Handling Group, Rubbermaid, and DSM Pharmaceuticals. See our 17 Jobs in Greenville, North Carolina Websites for this CityGovernment:
