Greenwich, Connecticut

Greenwich is located on Long Island Sound, six miles (10 kilometers) southwest of Stamford and 32 miles (51 kilometers) northeast of New York City. The town is part of Fairfield County, and home to 58,441 residents. Greenwich is made up of seven hamlets (Old Greenwich, Central Greenwich, Cos Cob, Glenville, Riverside, Banksville, and Byram), each with its own unique history and character.

Greenwich was first settled in 1640 and incorporated in 1665, and is home to many historic estates. It is also one of the richest communities in America, and former residents include Truman Capote, Glenn Close, Ron Howard, and many other household names.

The Bruce Museum is one of the town's best attractions, and offers a fine collection of art, historic memorabilia, and natural history displays. The Historical Society of Greenwich is housed in the 1730 Bush-Holley House, and contains furnishings and household items from the past two centuries, paintings by members of the Cos Cob art colony, and a collection of rare historic documents. History buffs should also visit the c. 1700 Putnam Cottage, which served as a tavern during the Revolutionary War.

The Greenwich Arts Council is the hub of the local cultural scene, and includes more than 1,000 members. The council organizes numerous special events, such as an annual pops concert series, "Art to the Avenue," and the "Play With Your Food" drama series, which combines a professional readings of one-act plays with tasty lunches. The council also manages the Bendheim Gallery, which offers rotating exhibits year-round. You'll find great music from the Greenwich Symphony Orchestra and the Greenwich Choral Society, and outstanding plays by the Acting Company of Greenwich and the Connecticut Playmakers.

In Central Greenwich, you'll find a great variety of shops, as well as fine restaurants offering American and international cuisine. For some outdoor fun, try sailing, biking, roller-blading, teeing off at one of six local golf courses, or spending the day on the beach at Greenwich Point. Calf Island, Great Captain Island, and Island Beach (aka Little Captain Island) are all located off the shore of Greenwich, and make great destinations for a summer outing.

Scenic and charming, Greenwich is a wonderful choice for your next home!
