Groton, Connecticut

Groton is located in southern Connecticut, across the Thames River from New London, and seven miles (11 kilometers) west of Mystic and 50 miles (80 kilometers) southeast of Hartford. There exists both a town of Groton and a city of Groton, and the city is a political subdivision of the town. Groton is part of New London County, and home to 10,010 residents.

Groton is situated on Long Island Sound, between the Thames and Mystic Rivers. Therefore, it's no surprise that the city is known for its natural beauty and many maritime attractions. Project Oceanology is a local science education program that has been running since 1972. They offer seal-watching cruises, lighthouse expeditions, and a variety of programs for children and adults. Groton is also home to the Submarine Force Museum, which houses the USS Nautilus and "the world's finest collection of submarine artifacts." More attractions can be found in nearby Mystic, including the Mystic Aquarium, and Mystic Seaport, one of the largest maritime museums in the world.

Would you rather enjoy the view outside than spend your day at the museum? Then head to Bluff Point Coastal Reserve. Here you can go fishing or shell fishing, and enjoy mountain biking and hiking in the peaceful woods, and admire the diverse wildlife of Long Island Sound. Haley Farm State Park is another popular recreation site, and offers a multi-purpose trail for jogging, hiking, and biking.

In addition to natural beauty, Groton is also rich in New England history. Visit Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park to learn about the 1781 massacre that occurred during the Revolutionary War, when British forces killed half of the American soldiers stationed at the fort. Groton also contains a number of 18th-century homes, including the Ebenezer Avery House and the circa 1783 Jabez Smith House.
