Gulfport, Mississippi, is situated on the Gulf of Mexico, 13 miles (21 kilometers) west of Biloxi and 75 miles (121 kilometers) northeast of New Orleans. It is the seat of Harrison County, and has a population of 71,127. Water babies can enjoy year-round recreation with the Gulf Coast as their playground! The Battalion Center also boasts an 18-hole golf course called Pine Bayou, which is open to civilians. Other fantastic local courses include Gulfport Par 3, the Bayou Vista Golf Course, and the Windance Country Club. For an invigorating workout, head for the Frances X. Collins Fitness Center and Pool or the 250-acre (101-hectare) Gulfport Sportsplex. The Harrison County Skate Park and Hockey Complex is particularly popular with youngsters, and is the home of the Mississippi Beachdogs inline hockey league. The Harrison County Fairgrounds is a comprehensive sports and entertainment complex and covers 640 acres (259 hectares). Facilities include eight soccer fields, three outdoor arenas, a covered area, and RV sites. The fairgrounds host a wide range of events throughout the year, including concerts, rodeos, motorcross competitions, and of course, the annual Harrison County Fair. The Lynn Meadows Discovery Center is one of the nation's top 50 children's museums, and features a range of exhibits to capture kids' mind and imaginations. Gulf Islands Water Park is another great family attraction, and offers thrilling water slides, a gigantic wavepool, and 18 acres (seven hectares) of watery fun. Looking for some entertainment? The Gulfport Little Theatre has been offering quality productions since 1946, while Gathering Grove Productions presents theater and visual art exhibits that promote human rights. Racing fans will find weekly summer events at the Gulfport Drag Way, and gamers will love the 1,035 slots and 14 tables at the Island View Casino Resort. Feeling particularly lucky?
