Hamilton, Ontario

Did you know that there are more than 30 cities in the world named Hamilton? With that in mind, what would make you choose Hamilton, Ontario, over such exotic destinations as Hamilton, Tasmania, Hamilton, Alabama, or even Hamilton, Scotland?

Well, first of all, Hamilton, Ontario, is no sleepy hamlet. With its population of 490,268 (making it the fourth-largest city in Ontario) and its close proximity to Toronto (less than an hour by car), Hamilton has grown into a thriving metropolis with lots to offer.

If you consider yourself a shopaholic, then give the Lime Ridge Mall a whirl. With its location just off the Lincoln M. Alexander Parkway and more than 200 stores, it's a heaven for all shopping enthusiasts.

However, if you are more into obscure items of yesteryear, then the Millgrove Antique Market will be up your alley. On your way home, don't forget to stop at Joe-Glow Handcrafted Scented Candles for a perfect gift for that special someone.

Of course, Hamilton has much, much more than just shopping: there are 1,625 (hectares) 4,018 acres of green areas and 137 kilometers (85 miles) of trails, enough to satisfy even the most hard-core outdoor fanatics. Rollerblade along Lake Ontario on the Breezeway Trail, do quarter pipes in the Ancaster Skateboard Park, or relax by the harbor in Pier 4 Park. There's also an opportunity to rub shoulders with the toughest of the tough, as the Trans Canada Trail runs through Hamilton, intersecting at the Hamilton- to-Brantford Trail and the Chippewa Trail.

Hamilton also has it share of interesting art galleries and museums including the Art Gallery of Hamilton, where it is easy to spend a whole day looking at the work of local and international artists. For those who have fond memories of the classic book Anne of Green Gables, visiting the West Field Heritage Village is an absolute must. The village is a living museum and most of the Anne of Green Gables' films were shot here.

All in all, Hamilton has a little bit for everyone. Come see for yourself.
