Hanna, Alberta

Just two hours northeast of Calgary, in scenic east-central Alberta, lies the town of Hanna, the Home of the Canada Grey Goose.

Hanna takes its name from David Blythe Hanna (a Canadian industrialist and former president of the Canadian National Railway) and there are good reasons for this. Had the area not become a divisional point for the Great Northern Railway in 1912, the town might never have existed. And for those interested in exploring history further, there is Hanna's Pioneer Museum.

Today, Hanna is busy improving and renovating its infrastructure. As the center of a broader trading area known as Short Grass Country, Hanna is primarily a services town for nearby agricultural, oil, and gas industries. And since its construction in the 1970s, the Sheerness Power Generating Station, 15 miles (24 kilometers) southeast of the town, has played a major role in driving the town's economy.

Hanna offers residents a full range of community services. Schooling is available from kindergarten through to high school. And in addition to a sport-plex and curling rink, the town also has a community center that acts as the focal point for community events and recreational activities. Community events in Hanna include the annual fall fair in August and the Hanna Indoor Pro Rodeo every September.

Outdoor pursuits in the countryside around Hanna revolve mainly around fishing and hunting. The Helmer Dam and Fox Lake both offer anglers excellent opportunities for a second chance to "get the one that got away." And, as the home of the Canada gray goose, the town draws hunters from all over North America.
